UN committee to meet Iranian officials on visa issue

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations legal counsel would meet Iranian mission officials to sort out the legal ramifications of denial of visa to Tehran’s Ambassador nominee to the world body, a UN official said here.

Iran is requesting a special meeting of a UN committee to discuss the matter urgently a UN official here said.

Cyprus Ambassador to UN Nicholas Emiliou, who chairs the 19-member committee that handles immigration and security for diplomats, told reporters that a meeting would likely be held next week.

“They have specified that they do not request any action on the part of the committee. They simply wish to brief us for the time being at least,” Emiliou said.

Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador Hossein Dehghani on Monday sent a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon requesting that the UN Committee on Relations with the Host Country address the denial in an “extraordinary and urgent manner”.

“This decision of the US government has indeed negative implications for multilateral diplomacy and will create a dangerous precedence and affect adversely the work of inter-governmental organisations and activities of their member states,” Mr Dehghani wrote.
