ATTU plans to boost activity in region

KARACHI: The Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) has chalked out plans for the promotion of game among cadets and juniors. This was the crux of executive board meeting held at Wuhan, China, recently on the sidelines of Asia Cup.

Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) president, S.M. Sibtain, who attended the meeting in his capacity as vice-president ATTU, said on Thursday the body will sponsor four regional camps on the eve of South Asian cadet and juniors table tennis events.

Apart from providing qualified coach to impart training to budding youth for eight to 10 days in camp, the ATTU will provide financial assistance of $10,000 to the hosts to meet the cost, he added.

According to PTTF chief, Pakistan plays host to the seven-nation South Asian cadet and juniors table tennis tournament in June. India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives besides the hosts have
confirmed their participation in the contest, he said.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan had hosted a similar event in 2008.

Sibtain said outstanding players of the cadet and juniors events will be sent to China for two weeks training to sharpen their skills. The camp trainees will also feature in ITTF juniors and cadet competition.

Asked about the selection of Pakistan teaam for the upcoming event, he said juniors will be picked on the basis of their national rankings while a domestic competition will form criteria for
selection of cadets.
