Rider Wasim scores hat-trick of wins at KRC

KARACHI: Rider Wasim stole the day’s limelight by piloting home a splendid treble as all but one favourite swept the five-race card in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse here on Sunday.

Wasim’s two of the three winners were stables mates — mares My Qaswa and National Queen — saddled by trainer M. Hanif and belonging to owner Irfan Mehdi.

My Qaswa made amends while getting the better of colt Silk Master by a length-and-a-quarter to land the second race as mare Capri and filly New Hope followed the next two places in a small field of five horses.

Farjad Habib, rider of New Hope, was suspended for two weeks for ‘unsatisfactory’ riding on his mount.

In the fifth and concluding race Mr Qaswa’s stable mate National Queen atoned for last week’s loss to oblige all and sundry. She got past co-favourite bay horse Frankestein by half-a-length for honours.

Wasim’s third winner was five-year-old mare Gumnam who made it two wins on trot in the third race with a three-length success over colt Touching Wood. Sher Dil had to be content with third place ahead of public fancy Mangia Dil among eight starters.

At the outset, riding boy A. Qayyum galloped bay horse Grey Song to a two-and-a-half lengths victory over filly Khazana to pick up spoils in the opener.

Vizerd, a five-year-old bay horse, stretched his winning sequence defeating Arkadian as he pleased by six lengths to claim the fourth race with Asad Aksir astride.
