New JIT to probe Islamabad court attacks

ISLAMABAD: The interior ministry has constituted a new joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the attacks at the district courts in Islamabad, after the Supreme Court (SC) disbanded the previous one, sources told Dawn on Thursday.

The previous team was constituted by the chief commissioner on the request of the police. It was working under the supervision of a SP.

Being dissatisfied with the investigation of Islamabad police, the SC not only rejected the report submitted by the police regarding the attacks at the district and sessions courts in Islamabad but ordered reconstitution of the team.

The new team comprises senior officers of police and forensic experts and it will work under the supervision of FIA director Mohsin Butt, along with DIG Amjad Khan, who is stationed at the National Police Bureau, and representatives of civilian and military intelligence agencies.

Earlier, the gunman of the additional district and session judge denied the allegation that he accidentally killed the judge.

Besides, the reader of the judge also told the SC that the gunman was pressurised by the police to give a favourable statement.
