Hayat Sherpao’s death anniversary
PESHAWAR: The 39th death anniversary of Hayat Mohammad Khan Sherpao will be observed at Sherpao village in Charsadda on Tuesday (Feb 11). A public meeting will also be held on this occasion.
Hayat Sherpao was a close aide of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and served the Pakistan Peoples Party as its first provincial chairman. He had the credit to strengthen PPP in the province.
He faced trials and suffered imprisonment during the movement against Ayub’s martial law. In 1970, when PPP won general elections, he was appointed governor.
He had also won the provincial assembly elections and served as senior minister.
He played his role for maintenance of law and order when bomb blasts had become a routine in 1974.
Hayat Sherpao was killed in a bomb blast on Feb 8, 1975 when he was administering oath to elected representatives of history department of the University of Peshawar.
