LAHORE: The Derby Trials will be the highlight of the nine-race card drawn for the 24th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday

A term race for Pakistani four-year-old colts and fillies, the event is considered a test of stamina and speed over the 2,000 metres distance while it would also set out probable contenders for the Pakistan Derby which is slated to be run on March 2.

Incidentally barring a couple of runners, all Derby hopefuls are taking part, including two colts from Karachi in what should be a fascinating contest.

The supporting event, the Munir Ahmed Dar Memorial Cup named after the former steward of Jockey Club Of Pakistan (JCP) and ex-national hockey skipper.

Meanwhile, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have notified the award of deterrent punishment to three trainers for their involvement in actions defaming the genteel sports.

Last week three trainers ran their trained horses in unfit condition in different events to make money with foul tactics.

The unscrupulous trainers to be penalised are Mohammad Afzal (fined Rs30,000) and M. Mumtaz (Rs20,000) and Shakir Hussain (Rs20,000).
