Floods inundate Bolivia

Some 40,000 people have been affected by deadly floods and heavy rain in parts of Bolivia this week.

Their homes now under water, residents in one city are now camping out on the side of the highway- the only dry land available.

We've lost various things likes clothes and beds, this woman says. And our animals- which feed us- have drown.

Officials say some 17,000 hectres of farmland have been flooded leaving entire communities isolated from emergency supplies and assistance.

Earlier this week, Vice President Alvaro Garcia visited some of the worst affected areas and helped distribute some of the 170 tonnes of aid allocated for flood victims.

The rains are expected to continue until mid-March, increasing the chances of an even worse flood season then in 2007 when El Nino floods displaced half a million residents.
