Drug abuse among young people is a very real and serious issue these days, and one that severely affects Pakistan as well. To Faakhir, it is equivalent to suicide, “Drug abuse has increased tremendously during the past decade here. It leads to destruction of an individual’s personality and peace of mind for family members, the breaking down and ultimately undoing of the very fabric of society.”

Young people in particular have a serious inclination towards drug abuse. “Youth are impressionable and the culture of drugs, sex and rock ‘n’ roll influences kids. Anywhere in the world, youth are generally more curious, adventurous and at times even foolhardy — they constantly want to try out new things and may even adopt bad habits in the process. They are more vulnerable with loads of questions in their minds about careers, jobs, family, future, etc. Some are so impatient and anxious that they turn to drugs and can end up inflicting severe self-damage,” says Faakhir.

The singer pinpoints the need for a reality check and start educating people about the hazards of alcoholism and drug abuse instead of considering it a taboo.

Moreover, a sense of loss in love can also contribute to the menace of drugs. “I have seen people resort to drugs and alcohol after heartbreak or rejection from a loved one. All I want to say is: it’s not the end of the world!” It is said that love is a potent force, one which strengthen an individual and compels him/her to become a better person.

Faakhir’s latest video, Shikva, from the album Dil Chaahay, revolves around an accident due to DUI (driving under influence). “Whatever happens around us leaves a mark on our lives. A recent incident where someone I knew lost her life in a car crash when her companion plunged the car into a ravine shook me up pretty bad.”

Faakhir describes the concept of the video and continues, “The loss of a promising young life due to reckless DUI inspired me to come up with this story board. Adnan Kandhar is a new young and talented director and he has done a great job with the video. I have always been a staunch advocate for ban on drug abuse as well as controlling alcoholism in Pakistan. Let’s face it: in the West where alcohol is legal, DUI is a serious offence and a repeat of which can elevate this misdemeanor to a felony. In Pakistan, sloshed and stoned drivers get away with killing people on the streets which, in essence, is like getting away with murder.”

According to the singer, meaningful videos can add value to songs, “I’m big on detailed accounts, narrative and tales in my music videos and produce all my videos with a theme in mind.” Presently, Faakhir says he has many local and international performances in the pipeline.
