Commission probing Bhoja air crash starts proceedings

ISLAMABAD: The judicial commission constituted to probe the Bhoja air crash of April 2012 in which 127 passengers and crew members died, commenced its proceedings at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday.

The commission, headed by Justice (retired) Ghulam Rabbani, summoned Farooq Bhoja, the owner of the airlines, director general of civil aviation agency (CAA) and the aggrieved families who filed the petitions for January 13, 2014.

On Sunday, the commission held its first meeting which was attended by Air Vice Marshal Faiz Amir and Additional District and Sessions Judge Pervaizul Qadir Memon, the secretary of the commission.

Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui had formed the commission in July this year to verify whether the licence to Bhoja Air was issued in accordance with the law and that the airlines had the required infrastructure.

Similarly, the commission will ascertain whether the cockpit crew was trained and the flight was technically sound or not. It will also seek details of the aircraft used for flight B213 and check its history, mileage and maintenance record.

The court had set a deadline of three months after the commission commenced to complete the investigation.

The families of seven of the victims had filed the petitions in IHC in September 2012 seeking an independent inquiry into the incident.
