Civil strife in Dhaka

At least three lawyers were injured after they were attacked by pro-government activists during a protest inside the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka on Sunday. Police denied the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18 parties alliance the permit for a mass gathering after opposition chief Begum Khaleda Zia called for her activists to march to the city, protesting against what she called farcical elections on January 5. More than 150 people have died in political violence in Bangladesh since the crisis intensified in October. The conflict pits an opposition alliance led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party against Awami League leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who accuses Zia of protecting people being tried or convicted of war crimes involving the nation's 1971 independence war against Pakistan.
