Abstract landscape paintings put on show

ISLAMABAD, Dec 12: The medium of acrylic painting might not automatically conjure up the images of modern landscapes but the newest exhibition at the Tanzara Gallery had the visitors thinking differently.

Skill was certainly on display when the exhibition of “Four seasons’ was opened to art lovers on Thursday.

The abstract landscapes are the works by Ubaid Syed who is currently based in Sweden. He is well-known for his impressions of the local environments coloured by the austere beauty of the landscape.

In the display, nearly 30 of his paintings all price-tagged Rs50,000 except two, take their direct inspiration from the “Lapland” - the land of the midnight sun, eight seasons and where ‘heaven touches the earth’.

“The style is so controlled,” said a guest looking at one of the large paintings and trying to figure out the details hidden in the bold strokes of the eye-catching acrylic colours.

For the artist, this terrain is extraordinary in its variety of form, light and colour, providing him with the vistas that he translates onto canvases with skill and dexterity.

Ubaid Syed’s paintings are well balanced and the energy floating around captivates the eye. The rich colour palette and bold compositions help create delightful effects making the painting aesthetically pleasing.

He has held more than 17 national and international exhibitions.

“Instead of exerting my imagination and sensuality, I think skill is also the answer,” said a visitor about the Ubaid Syed’s abstract landscapes.

Another visitor thought that Ubaid Syed’s canvases depicted awe-inspiring rural scenes, appreciating the imposing and pulsating colours used for the skies, the foreground and the background, which brought home the myriad moods of nature in bold artistic strokes.

Although the landscapes are actual places, impressionistic landscapes appear as dreamlike settings in which motion seems suspended at the same time illuminating Ubaid Syed’s love for his natural environments.

Ubaid Syed has displayed his works in 17 different local and international exhibitions. The exhibition will continue till December 27.
