Scales sprints to victory in 100m

SACRAMENTO (California), June 14: Mardy Scales of the United States won the men’s 100 metres over Canada’s Pierre Browne at the American collegiate track and field championships on Friday.

Scales held off Browne, winning in a time of 10.25 seconds in a race that featured two false starts. Browne finished in 10.34, just ahead of Michael Frater in 10.36.

In the women’s 100 metres, Aleen Bailey, of Jamaica, defeated Muna Lee with a time of 11.18 seconds. Lee (11.22) beat out Lauryn Williams (11.31) for second.

Ukraine’s Irina Kharun won the women’s javelin with a collegiate record toss of 61.82 metres. Current javelin records are for the newer, heavier implement first used four years ago.

Carl Myerscough captured the men’s shot put with the third-longest toss in NCAA history of 21.92 metres.

Dan Lincoln followed up his win in the 10,000 metres on Thursday with a victory in the steeplechase on Friday.
