Pakistani cueists impress in Latvia

KARACHI, Nov 30: Pakistani cueists continued their winning run by notching up second straight victories in the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) snooker championship which is in progress in the Latvian city of Daugavpils.

Defending champion Mohammad Asif was convincing in his 4-1 victory over country’s Peteris Ermansons on Friday evening, the scores being 67-13, 83-2, 46-50, 105-14, 87-32. Asif piled up a break of 66 in the fourth frame.

Playing in the same session, Asif’s compatriot and former Asian No 2 Mohammad Sajjad sent Latvian Janis Bindze packing 4-1 (18-84, 77-1, 79-30, 76-20, 76-54).

Former national champion Shahid Aftab hammered a century break (105) in the second frame as he whipped Singapore’s Shu Seng Chua 80-49, 105-0, 55-64, 72-4, 91-23 on Saturday.

This is the second century break by a Pakistani cueist the first being 110 scored by Sajjad in his opener.

Pakistan No 1 Imran Shehzad made short work of Lithuania’s Vilius Schulte and was home (110-0, 78-10, 90-29, 53-18. Imran also cracked two elegant breaks of 61 and 73 in the first and second frames.
