Two tannery workers die, three faint

KASUR, Oct 28: Two workers died while three others fainted due to poisonous gas in a tannery at Din Gar in B-Division police precincts here on Monday.

During the processing of leather at Akhtar Tannery, a big rotating wooden drum dislocated and fell on the ground. Worker Muhammad Saleem climbed to the top of the drum and opened it. Due to the poisonous gas, emanating from the drum, he fainted and fell into it.

Four other workers, namely Jamil Ahmed, Khalid, Iqbal and Munir, went to help their colleague but they also fell into the drum. Other workers smashed the drum with hammers to get their colleagues out.

Saleem was recovered dead while Jamil, Khalid, Iqbal and Munir fainted.

Munir and Khalid were given first aid on the spot while Jamil and Iqbal were rushed to DHQ Hospital. Later, they were referred to Lahore General Hospital in a critical condition where Jamil also died.

It is pertinent to mention here that despite repeated untoward incidents in the leather manufacturing sector in Kasur, there are no safety equipment available for workers and they are seldom provided with gloves and masks.

POISONED: A woman allegedly poisoned her husband to death in connivance with her lover in Kot Balaka Singh village in the Phoolnagar police area Ashraf married Yasmeen some 10 years back. Recently, Yasmeen developed relations with Yameen of the same locality which caused frequent fights between the couple. On Monday, Yasmeen poisoned her husband to death and fled.

INJURED: A schoolboy was seriously injured as a stray bullet hit him during jubilation fire at Maan village in Sadar police limits here.

Some guests, under the influence, resorted to aerial firing during the wedding ceremony of Abdul Rehman. As a result, the unidentified schoolboy, who was passing by, was injured. He was rushed to DHQ Hospital.

ROBBERY: Robbers deprived the manager of a petrol pump of Rs1.5 million in the Phoolnagar police limits.

Afser Joyia was on his way to the bank to deposit Rs1.5 million by his car when he was intercepted by three robbers near Parnawa village. They snatched cash and a mobile phone from Joyia and fled.
