11 arrested over swara cases in Swat

MINGORA, Oct 25: Swat police on Friday arrested 11 people over two swara cases in upper parts of the district.

Police said five people recently held a jirga in Paklai area of Madyan and announced marriage of Saeeda, 3, and Ali Shah, 12, to settle an honour-related dispute in line with swara tradition.

They said mother of the girl filed a case with police against husband Ali Ahmad, brother Khurshid and three others, including Mohammad Afzal, Mohammad Dayam and Ali Bash, over the swara incident.

Police said Ali Ahmad allegedly kidnapped Mehvish, daughter of Ali Bash, three years ago before solemnising second marriage with her. They said they’d arrested four accused, while Ali Bash managed to flee.

Also, police said they had booked 10 people in Kas area of Kalam valley for holding a jirga to settle an honour-related dispute under swara tradition.

They said the case against the accused had registered at the request of the mother of two minor girls, who were married off to settle the dispute.

Police said seven of the accused had been arrested.

They said Zaibur Rehman had married Shaheen after the latter got divorce from first husband, Amirzada.

Police said a jirga held on Sept 30 had decided about the marriage of two minor daughters of Zaibur Rehman, including four-year-old Saima and six-year-old Ulfat, with Shireenzada and Shoaib of the rival family under swara tradition.
