View from abroad: ignorance and peace

THIS is with reference to the article ‘View from abroad: ignorance and peace’ by Irfan Husain (Aug 12).

The writer, generally well-informed and erudite, has mixed a constitutional fact with the question of tolerance of the Pakistani people.

Ahmadis were unequivocally declared non-Muslims in the constitution.

Every Pakistani who puts faith and trust in the constitution must propound the same in a public discourse.

This is an agreed-upon matter among all schools of thought (sects) of Islam, and is no more a matter of tolerance alone.

So, responsibility demands us to stop confusing things again. It could have been said that 10 scientists from the Muslim world or, even more clearly, nine Muslims and one non-Muslim from the Islamic world have won the Nobel Prize. Jamaat-i-Ahmadiya is not a sect of Islam, so we should try to refrain from implying so in our writings.
