Student Profile: Anoop

I love technology but I also I have a lot of interest in commerce and business. UNSW gave me a flexible option of choosing a variety of courses in both areas.

I have completed e-commerce courses, business courses and an entrepreneurship course, as well as a couple of information systems courses related to IT that were offered not by the School of Computing but by the Australian School of Business.

I’ve also had the opportunity to do some internships, which have taught me the all-important skills that students need to know before going into the workplace, learning how Australian business culture works.

I was placed in the Student Development Office at the University. In the interview I told them about my IT background and I was lucky enough to be able to help with developing the department’s new website. I got to learn about interpersonal skills, customer service skills and conducted meetings with sub unit heads - it gave me a good chance to enhance my business communication skills.

I grew up in Singapore and then went to India with my family, where I did my bachelor’s degree in IT. I worked in the family business for a while before I came here.

I chose Australia because the quality of education here is really high, and also because UNSW had the course I wanted to do. The course contents were all available online so even before I came here, I could browse this information and see what interested me.

I chose to study IT because I see technology as changing the world. It’s everywhere. I can’t imagine 10 years down the road how much it will have advanced; it’s this curiosity that keeps me going.

I’ve been in Australia for three years now and I like it a lot. I like the environment, the people and the place.

Australia is huge and there are so many opportunities, so I believe there’s a good future for me here.
