RAWALPINDI, Aug 14: Four people were killed in separate incidents in the garrison city on Wednesday night.

In the first incident, President Muttahida Transport Union Rawalpind-Islamabad was shot dead in Harley Street.

Initial reports suggested that Malik Sultan Awan was on his way home in his car when some gunmen blocked his way in Harley Street and opened fire on him.

Later, the assailants who are yet to be identified, managed to escape from the scene.

The injured, Malik Sultan Awan, was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead.

Police said the reason behind his murder is yet to be ascertained.

In another incident, a clash between two groups in the Quaid-i-Azam Colony, Adiala Road, resulted in the death of one person.

The clash started over a petty issue which led to a brawl as Adeel Haider quarreled with Ashraf, an army man.

Residents of the area intervened to settle the issue but a brawl started after the army man called for help.

In response, Adeel’s friends also rushed to help their friend.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Waheed-ur-Rehman Khattak told Dawn that while the two groups clashed, Hamid Nawaz, a friend of Adeel, was killed by the army man’s friends.

The SP said the real circumstances in which Hamid Nawaz died would be known after an investigation was launched, adding that three of the army men had been taken into custody.

Tariq Gondal sub-inspector, who is leading the investigation into the murder case, told Dawn that Hamid Nawaz was aged between 30 and 32 and was killed in the exchange of fire between the two groups.

He said Noman Ashiq, who came to help Adeel, was also injured in the firing.

The SI said: “Adeel first fired gunshots in the air and the army men responded in the same, resulting in the death of Hamid Nawaz and injury to Noman.”

He added that one of the army men was also injured in the cross firing and was later shifted to hospital.

Meanwhile, two people were killed in Dhoke Banaras (Race Course police limits) on Wednesday night.

Police said Azhar Gul, who belonged to Afghanistan and was residing with his brother Rehmat Gul in Dhoke Banaras, had old enmity with Zahid Khan over the issue of a kidnapping.

On Wednesday night, Azhar Gul and Rehmat Gul were at a shop when Zahid, along with two others, opened fire on them, killing Azhar on the spot and critically injuring his brother and the shopkeeper.

In response, the victim fired on the attackers and critically injured Zahid.

Azhar Gul was brought to the District Headquarters Hospital while his brother Rehmat Gul and shopkeeper Jumma Khan are stated to be in a critical condition.

Though the injured Zahid Khan managed to escape along with his accomplices, he later succumbed to his injuries, police said.
