Flooded nullahs playing havoc

SIALKOT, Aug 7: Eight-year-old Zeeshan drowned in the flood water of the Dek nullah near Nawan Pul in Qila Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Residents said the tragedy hit the family when it was leaving the area for safer places.

Irrigation officials said 13 villages of both Daska and Sambrial tehsils were inundated on Tuesday due to another flood spate in the Aik nullah. The villages hit by the flooding are: Kharoliyaan, Uchiyaan Kharoliyaan, Hamza Kharoliyaan, Dandpur, Motra and Jaamkey Cheema. The flooding hit standing crops on hundreds of acres.

The water level in the Dek nullah was 13,500 cusecs on Wednesday near Chahoor-Pasrur. The nullah flood has inundated 47 villages of Pasrur, Zafarwal and Qila Ahmedabad.

Senior irrigation officials said a high flood in the Dek nullah had inundated 20 flooded villages of Pasrur tehsil and 27 villages of Zafarwal and Qila Ahmedabad.

According to stranded people, there was waist-deep water in Jabbokey, Chak Machchaana, Nawaadey, Eispur, Seehowal, Jeesatiwala, Qila Ahmedabad, Sojowali, Kukka Pan, Poond, Baangey, Rasheedpur, Ghangor, Khewan Cheema, Saarh Fataah, Belolpur, Chcheema, Peera, Baryar, Balloki, Main Harpal, Punj Grayeen Bajwa, Narangwali, Dhung, Kheemowali, Baddo Cheema and Khewa Hundalaan.

District Officer (Coordination) Abid Husain Awan said that 13,719 cusecs passed through the Aik nullah near Oora. He said the district administration saved two protective dykes from collapse at Shatabgarh and Kotli Murlaan.

He said the water level was souring up in the Dek and Aik nullahs at Chahoor and Oora.

In Narowal, flooded Dek, Baeen and Bassanter nullahs inundated 62 villages of Qila Ahmedabad, Zafarwal, Badomalhi, Noorkot and other Narowal areas.
