Heavy rain paralyses life in most parts of Balochistan

QUETTA: Thunderstorms followed by heavy rain paralysed life on Tuesday night as Quetta and other parts of Balochistan plunged into darkness after power supply was suspended from the main transmission line.

One child was killed after the wall a house collapsed in Nawan Killi, a locality in the outskirts of Quetta.

Hill torrents hit various parts of Quetta and most of the roads turned into a virtual stream. The heavy downpour started at about 9pm and continued for one and a half hours, forcing people busy in Eid shopping to run for safety.

All markets and shopping malls in the city were closed. A number of signboards and billboards fell.

Floodwater entered a number of houses in low-lying localities of the city, damaging households and property.

A spokesman for the Quetta Electricity Company said the Quetta-Sibi transmission line supplying electricity to Quetta and other 15 districts of

Balochistan had developed a fault after the thunderstorm and heavy rain.

He said the company had restored power supply to some areas of Quetta late in the night from alternative sources.

Other districts and most areas of Quetta were without power.

“We are trying to rectify the fault in the transmission line,” the spokesman said.
