Security for Punjab jails beefed up

RAWALPINDI: In a late-night move, well-equipped contingents of Rangers were deployed on all central jails across Punjab, including Central Jail Adiala which houses about 70 terrorist suspects, it is learnt.

The source said that as part of the reviewed security arrangements 27 Rangers were added to the 18 already deployed at the Adiala jail on Monday night to further tighten security around the over-crowded jail.

The decision was taken at a top-level meeting held between the IGP Prisons Punjab Farooq Nazir and DG Rangers, the source said, adding that the Rangers deployed at Adiala would be at the disposal of the police.

A senior official told Dawn that their main concern was to ensure foolproof security arrangements for four jails in the province, including Central Jail Multan, Faisalabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi, because most suspects involved in suicide bombings and sectarian violence were kept there.
