Rs1.6m gas bill: youth attempts suicide

LAHORE, July 16: A youth attempted self-immolation on Tuesday after all his hopes to get a Rs1.6 million domestic gas bill rectified from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines dashed.

Muhammad Saleem, of Islamnagar was rushed to hospital with severe burns where his condition was said to be serious.

Initial investigations showed Saleem’s domestic gas meter was stolen and he had got a case registered with Shahdara police station against unidentified thieves.

As he had applied for the new meter, it was installed last month. But, he was shocked when he received a Rs1.6 million bill from SNGPL for gas use for a month.

He approached the SNGPL offices for correction of the bill but his application was rejected by the authority concerned. In a fit of frustration, Saleem attempted self-immolation after dowsing himself with petrol.

NABBED: Locals caught red-handed two youth when they were stealing a motorcycle and handed them over to police after giving them a good thrashing in Old Anarkali Food Street early on Tuesday.

The suspects reportedly lifted a bike from the food street parking after Sehri and were dragging it away when some locals dared them.
