Bollywood attends Pran's 'chautha'

Bollywood biggies including thespian Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan on Monday attended the prayer meet held in the memory of veteran actor Pran who passed away on Friday.

Pran, loved and feared in equal measure by movie-goers for his roles in Bollywood hits like Milan, Madhumati and Zanjeer, passed away at the age of 93 due to prolonged illness.

Among those attended the 'Chautha', held between 5 to 6pm at a Gurudwara in suburban Santacruz, were actors Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya, Dilip Kumar, Sairabanu, Karan Johar's mother Hiroo, Prem Chopra, Shabana Azmi and Randhir Kapoor.

Also spotted were Sanjay Khan, Subhash Ghai, Ramesh Taurani, Suresh Oberoi, Chunky Pandey, Jackie Shroff, Govind Nihlani, Gulshan Grover, music director Anandji, Raza Murad and others, HT reported.

The star appeared in more than 350 Hindi movies in a prolific career spanning six decades.

Pran is survived by wife Shukla Sikand, two sons and a daughter.

A look at Pran’s celebrated legacy

Pran played many roles in his long and distinguished film career. He started out in Bollywood with Yamla Jay (1940).

One of his iconic roles was Malang Chacha in the Manoj Kumar, Asha Parekh-starrer Upkar (1967).He went on to essay other popular characters such as Sher Khan in Zanjeer (1973), JJ in Don (1978) and Gajendra in Ram Aur Shyam (1967).

Earlier this year, Pran was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award, in the same month that marked the centenary of Indian cinema.
