Saving white-backed vultures

THIS is with reference to the news that the white-backed vulture is on the verge of extinction in Pakistan. The WWF has pointed out an alarming 98 per cent decline in its population. Experts are of the view that the scavengers feeding on the carcasses of cattle injected with diclofenac sodium die within 60 hours due to damage of heart muscle.

Although the drug was banned, reportedly the smuggled drug is available in the market. The meat consumed by humans might also contain this drug. The veterinarians need to be educated about the adverse effects of unwarranted use of drugs while injecting cattle.
