Musharraf trial: same old faces

NAWAZ Sharif has announced in the National Assembly that the government will try Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf for treason. It is believed to be a tactical move by the PML-N to divert the attention of media from loadshedding, the price hike, budget, terrorist attacks, and the recent killings of tourists at Nanga Parbat.

However, this move may only prove successful for the time being but would not hold good for long as the public is least interested in a revenge trial by politicians of a military dictator.

Instead, they want a solution of their daily problems which have made their lives miserable.

Mr Sharif must not forget that the people have not given him a heavy mandate owing to the past performance of his previous tenures. They have elected him because of the misdeed of the PPP government which had miserably failed to deliver.

The tragedy with our main political parties is that they have the same old teams to work with and one cannot expect any better results from the present lot also.

Mr Sharif should remember that the same team and perhaps the same advisers had landed him in exile, or was he himself responsible for his follies?

Vindictive approachTHE PML-N has moved forward to initiate a treason case against former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf. Pakistan’s memory is not that short; they have not forgotten the storming of one of the judiciary by goons during the last Sharif government.

Wasn’t that an equally an act of treason? Moreover, our great religion teaches us to forgive and forget when one gets a chance to overcome his opponent.

Thirdly, the opening up of such a case will open Pandora’s Box as other skeletons in this closet can turn and twist this case to the detriment of the newly installed government.

Lastly, during the last election campaign, this treason case was not in the manifesto of the PML-N.

By adopting this vindictive approach, it gives a wrong signal to the world as to how we treat past president. Let it also be remembered that he is still respected the world over.
