Batting blues

THIS refers to Bobby’s (Saleem Altaf’s) statement (June 13). Millions of disappointed people from the Khyber Hills to Karachi see him to be the main reason for the batting failures.

As a fast bowler he should have cited the colossal waste of time and money for the discovery of an ‘express fast bowler’ when the crying need for the last couple of decades has been the dependability upon the top order.

In any class of cricket unless a team posts 300, its chances of success are pretty slim. This thought never seems to have flickered in the minds of the management. To them a few strokes of the Miandad Magic would set things right. But even he cannot perform the miracle of transforming technically deficient players into world-class batsmen.

The present management has to go but the next one has to hit the deck, running with a solution to this important and perennial problem.

A good clean, cricketing mind, a dedicated approach, short- and long-term plans, could produce at least six quality players in time for the World Cup. While doing so the magic mantra of talent, technique, temperament and training has to be strictly followed.
