Unruly behaviour

SOME time ago, in France, a minister’s snap, taken by a paparazzi photographer at a function, appeared in the press. Although the minister was innocent, he became a victim of yellow journalism. He had to resign after an uproar from the public.

The transparency standards set for rulers in Western countries are commendable. In Pakistan we see the opposite.

The recent violent behaviour of hijab-clad Nighar Sheikh calls for an immediate action against her. A practising Muslim must have a tender heart and should have behaved politely. On the contrary, what the bus passenger said was totally different from Sheikh’s contention.

What good can one expect from a lawmaker who lies publicly. This has tarnished her image in the eyes of the public and sent a negative image of our assemblies to the outer world.

Cosmetic treatment will not work and further defame the rulers. Those who fail at the very first threshold of life and character do not have any right to represent the people.

Sheikh must be sacked to set an example that respecting human beings is the foremost responsibility of our representatives.

IFTIKHAR MIRZAIslamabadFeudal mindset

WOMEN play an important role in the progress and development of a country. Unfortunately some women in our society are not playing a desirable role due to a variety of reasons.

Women who step out of their homes to supplement family incomes should be encouraged, but not those like the one who happens to be a representative of the people but has chosen to abuse another woman.

A woman MPA mistreated a ground hostess of a bus over a trivial matter. This reflects a feudal mindset which unfortunately still prevails in our country.

These MPAs knock at the doors of the people for votes before elections and promise them to safeguard their rights and provide solutions to their problems.

Once they come into power, all these lofty promises are a thing of the past. This is hypocrisy.

A small step has already been taken when the media brought people’s attention to this issue. The passengers who stood by that ground hostess should also be commended for their brave and courageous act. By evoking awareness and spirit of equality in people, such incidents in future could be avoided.
