Boat capsizes, ‘nearly all’ passengers rescued

KARACHI, June 21: A boat capsized near the Keamari jetty with around 50 people aboard on Friday.

While ‘almost everyone’ was rescued in an operation spearheaded by fishermen of two islands, officials and residents said a woman and her two children were feared missing.

At least 50 people were on the boat going to Baba Island when it keeled over just a few furlongs away from the Keamari jetty.

“We rescued everyone…almost,” said Mohammad Rafiq, one of many islanders who saved the passengers, with a tinge of doubt that was echoed by the authorities also.

“Some 50 people, who were on the boat, have been rescued. Of them, 16 were shifted to the Civil and KPT hospitals. Most of them have been discharged and the rest are said to be out of danger,” said Gahanwer Ali Laghari, deputy commissioner of district west. He, however, said there were ‘unconfirmed’ reports about a woman and two children going missing.

“A KPT employee told us that a woman and two children are still missing. But it is unconfirmed as no passenger has complained about their disappearance so far,” said Mr Laghari.

He said the operation by the navy, coastguards and local fishermen searching for any ‘missing people’ was under way.
