HEC evolves software to detect plagiarism

ISLAMABAD, June 8: Research instructors should ensure that scholars prepare research papers in accordance with the latest international standards so that they are not caught by ‘Turnitin’, software used by Higher Education Commission (HEC) to detect plagiarism.

This was stated by Focal Person of Anti-Plagiarism Cell Adnan Rashid at a workshop organized for research instructors by the quality enhancement cell (QEC) at National University of Modern Languages (Numl) on Saturday.

The workshop was attended by 15 instructors from all over the country through Video Conferencing was at different university campuses. It focused on issues related to evolving referencing styles in research reports/theses, and Turnitin document processing. The participants shared details about referencing practices in their relevant disciplines.

Mr Rashid addressed issues by explaining the mechanism involved in Turnitin document processing.

He further told the participants that by aligning their research with the standards of Turnitin, they could add value and credibility to their researches otherwise they would not have any credit of their efforts.

According to an official of HEC, 20 percent similarities with other theses are acceptable because similar titles revolve around same idea but in case of over 20 percent similarities, theses are declared plagiarized. —A Reporter
