Student drowns in school pool

LAHORE, June 5: Lahore executive district officer (education) has constituted a two-member team to probe into death of an 11-year-old boy who reportedly drowned in the swimming pool of a private school on Wednesday.

The committee comprising District Education Officer (education) Iftikhar Javed Cheema and DEO (secondary education) Shahid Iqbal has been asked to submit its report within two days.

EDO Tahira Parveen said the district government would take action against the private school concerned and cancel its registration if its administration was found guilty in the probe.

She also said it was a matter of grave concern that the private schools were continuing with their academic schedules even in summer vacation in violation of Punjab school education department orders. She said such schools would be closed down in line with the government policy.

Ms Parveen also urged the parents to stop sending their children to schools and protect them from unbearable summer heat. She also urged parents to lodge complaints against private schools that were not allowing summer break.

Gulberg circle ASP Zahid Nawaz said police have yet to receive application from the victim’s family for registration of a case. He said statement of the swimming instructor of the school had been recorded.

Preliminary inquiries suggested the boy drowned accidentally, the ASP said, adding the instructor also failed to perform his duty.
