ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso has deferred meeting of Council of Common Interest (CCI), scheduled to meet here on Friday, after procedural objection raised by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister.

In a subsequent informal meeting, the present energy situation in the country was discussed.

Minister for Water and Power Dr Musadiq Malik briefed the participants on present energy situation and measures being taken by the government in the limited available time to improve the situation.

He informed that the power situation in the country was adversely impacted because of inefficiencies, element of corruption and mismanagement that encompassed the entire energy chain.

The minister said that hydel power generation in the country peaks to around 6000 MW for only few days and fluctuates between 800 to 4000 MW during the year.

The hydel generation is further restrained by the fact that it is not governed by storage capacity as perceived generally, but by the flow which is regulated by IRSA on the indent of provinces, he further informed.

Malik said that it is a myth that the total generation capacity is over 20,000 MW. “The assumption is bogus,” he said and added Punjab consumes 66 per cent of the total generation.
