THIS is with reference to your editorial ‘The larger picture: treason hearing’ (April 10).

It has rightly been mentioned in the editorial that the focus during the trial of Gen Musharraf shouldn’t remain confined to simply the events of 2007; rather it should encompass those of 1999 as well when the government of the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif was ousted who had tried to sack the general when he was on flight while returning to Pakistan from an official tour of Sri Lanka.

If at all Nawaz Sharif was that much interested in removing him, he should have adopted a proper procedure to do so when the general had landed. There wasn’t any need for a clandestine operation against him. If this ill-advised move on the part of Nawaz Sharif had succeeded, one doesn’t know as to what picture would have emerged at that time.

Coming to the general’s trial, it seems that people would have to wait for the outcome till such time the next government is in saddle. The incumbent caretaker government wouldn’t like to get involved in it, saying that the matter was beyond its mandate.

Gen Musharraf’s counsel has said that his client’s trial would open Pandora’s box and that many other people and institutions would get involved in it. But, the Supreme Court was all determined to go ahead with the proceedings.

What turn events would take in future only time would tell.
