LAHORE, Aug 13: One of the twins born at the Jinnah Hospital on late Sunday was kidnapped from gynecology ward of the facility on Monday.

According to preliminary inquiries, the incident took place four hours after a woman gave birth to female twins – the couple’s first off springs.

The couple holds responsible the doctors and other staff of the Gyne Unit-I for their baby’s kidnap while the administration of the hospital suspected that the newborn might have been taken away by one of the attendants present in the ward.

Asma Kashif, a resident of Kot Radha Kishan, had given birth to the twins late on Sunday in the emergency gyne unit.

Following the incident, the couple’s relatives lodged a strong protest and demanded immediate recovery of the newborn.

Hospital Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Afzal Shaheen told Dawn the twins were handed over to their father and grandfather who also signed the relevant documents.

He said later Asma was shifted to the Gyne Unit-I at 2:30am. As all the beds were occupied, the mother and the newborns were admitted to one of the five-bed side rooms of the unit where four other beds were occupied by as many attendants.

Asma alerted her relatives and Unit’s doctors at 4am when she found one of the twins missing, he said.

Dr Afzal said that after preliminary inquiry he suspended security guard of the ward and constituted a committee headed by an Associate Professor, Dr Farhat Naz to probe the matter.

A deputy medical superintendent, the security director and a senior doctor of the Gyne Unit-I would assist the committee that would submit its report within two days, he said. The MS said a criminal case had also been lodged against unidentified kidnapper (s) on the complaint of baby’s father.
