KARACHI, Feb 22: Two bandits were killed and their accomplices wounded in separate incidents in the city, police said on Wednesday.

A bandit was killed and his two accomplices were wounded in what the police described as an encounter with them in Gulistan-i-Jauhar late on Tuesday night.

The encounter took place in Block 3, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, where three gunmen were riding away on a stolen motorcycle after looting Dr Raja Khatri.

The police said the doctor was returning home after closing his private clinic when the suspects intercepted him and robbed him at gunpoint.

As the suspects were fleeing, a police party arrived at the scene, and an exchange of fire ensued between the bandits and the police.

The bandits, identified as Amir Khan, Abid Irshad and Babar Basheer, were wounded in the firing.

Police shifted them to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Amir died during treatment.

The police claimed to have seized two pistols, Rs12,500, cellphones and the snatched motorbike from the suspects.

SHO Sohail Khan said the wounded bandits were residents of Pehalwan Goth and the dead of Bhitai Abad, near the airport.

Police registered a case (FIR 99/2012) under Sections 395 (punishment for dacoity), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against the suspects on a complaint of Dr Khatri at the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station.

In the other incident, a bandit was killed and an accomplice of his wounded within the remit of the Solider Bazaar police station on Wednesday when a private security guard opened fire on the suspects.

The police said three bandits, who reportedly arrived there in a rickshaw, went on a looting spree in Ghaffar Masjid located within the remit of the Soldier Bazaar police station.

Eyewitnesses said the security guard of the mosque opened fire on the bandits.

Two of the bandits sustained bullet wounds and were caught while their third accomplice escaped, police said.

The police said the wounded were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where one died during treatment.

Police said the dead was identified as Afzal Baloch and the wounded as Sabir.

Both dacoits were residents of Moach Goth, Baldia Town.
