KARACHI: Additional Inspector-General Akhtar Hussain Gorchani on Tuesday claimed that police had apprehended a key suspect in a case pertaining to the firing in Shah Faisal Colony that left a student of Jamia Farooqia dead and four others wounded.

He was speaking to a 15-member delegation of religious leaders led by Moulana Abdul Khaliq.

DIG (east) Akram Naeem, SSP (east) Jawed Akhtar and other senior police officers also attended the meeting.

The police informed the delegation that the Shah Faisal Colony ASP had been transferred and DSP Shakil Awan had been appointed who was personally investigating the case.

On a request of the delegation, Mr Gorchani set up an inquiry committee under the supervision of an SP to probe into alleged negligence of the police in the incident. The committee would recommend legal action against the police if they were found negligent or anyone who exploited his authority, he added.

He directed the DIG (east) to complete all security measures after consultation with the Ulema and take every possible step to arrest absconders of the firing incident. The DIG was also asked to give progress report within a week.—PPI
