ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of Azerbaijan on Friday marked the 107th anniversary of its national independence with an official reception that celebrated the nation’s historical journey, reaffirmed its commitment to sovereignty and highlighted strong bilateral ties with Pakistan.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Khazar Farhadov welcomed dignitaries, diplomats, media representatives and friends of the embassy including chief guest Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik to the commemoration, noting the significance of May 28, 1918 - the date the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established as the first secular republic in the Muslim East.

“This day represents not only the declaration of sovereignty but also the spirit of resilience, sacrifice and unwavering quest for progress that characterizes the people of Azerbaijan,” the ambassador said.

He recounted the historic achievements of the short-lived republic, which, in less than two years, laid the foundation for democratic institutions, defined its borders and asserted its presence in international relations. Despite its brief existence, the republic played a critical role in shaping Azerbaijan’s democratic traditions and national identity, he added.

Ambassador Farhadov paid tribute to the leadership of national leader Heydar Aliyev and the continued vision of President Ilham Aliyev in maintaining the country’s independence since its restoration in 1991. “Azerbaijan has preserved its sovereignty through strong leadership, particularly under President Aliyev, who has carried forward the legacy of Heydar Aliyev,” he said.

Highlighting the close ties with Pakistan, he noted that Islamabad was among the first nations to recognise Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991. Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1992 and since then, Pakistan has remained a steadfast ally, especially during Azerbaijan’s territorial conflict with Armenia.

He also underscored Azerbaijan’s climate diplomacy, referencing a recent international conference hosted by the country.

“We were honoured by the participation of a high-level delegation from Pakistan, led by the prime minister, which reflects our joint commitment to climate cooperation and sustainable development,” he said.

The event concluded with a message of gratitude and hope, celebrating both the journey of Azerbaijan’s independence and the enduring friendship with Pakistan.
