PEOPLE from other parts of the world travel to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to enjoy nature, especially during summers. However, if you ask the natives, they will present a different picture of the region. There is a plethora of problems, such as lack of power supply and nearly non-existent internet connectivity.

In the modern world of technology, it is hard to imagine life and livelihood without the internet and electricity. But, unfortunately, the people in GB are still waiting for some magic to happen and which may ensure the availability of these basic utilities.

The youths of the region have limited job opportunities because there are no industries, and most of the people rely on freelancing for a livelihood.

But they are unable to compete with the rest of Pakistan because the cut-throat world of freelancing is dictated by deadlines.

One of the reasons related to issues with internet connectivity is that private-sector telecommunication companies do not operate in the area. They should be allowed and encouraged to provide internet services like they do in the rest of the country.

Life has become miserable for the local people. We are blessed with plenty of water resources, but the policymakers are not interested in using this water for power-generation. One wonders why. The government should keep an eye on the growing alienation among the local youths because of the lack of basic facilities in the region. All individuals, bodies, committees and institutions concerned should take the right steps to improve the situation.
