Pathetic ! but Kudos to Dawn for posting this.
This was when India had jumped into the war. It was Jihad.
Once again it was the religion running the state. Pathetic.
Looks more like graffiti, than pictures.
Everytime religion is used for personal gains such as wars it has been defeated. Fight for your country and live for your religion.
Please don't defame word "Jihad". Whenever Pakistan Army will call we shall and we must respond despite the call sign Jihad or whatever it is. I love my Country.
Last one is most funny
And we wonder why our Bengali brothers decided to part ways... and why 16Dec is celebrated in 2 countries (India & Bngl'esh) as a Victory day and in Pakistan - as a sorry day for our national integrity!
@arindam I would say dictator/s abusing the name and concepts of religion for his/their own ends
Dawn, Bravo bravo bravo.
Guess they didn't emerge victorious after all.....
It was dark time because India attacked us. During war one has to rally people and these ads are just that.
What's the point of this old news?
Religion should be purely your personal thing. Religion should not be mixed in ruling the country. It was mixed in the case of Pakistan from the very beginning. Now we are seeing the problems in Pakistan because of this.
@AdnanK true, its not the time to remember bad or ugly but to jointly come up as strong healthy neighboorhood
when you crush east pakistan muslims. Are you doing So called jihad too aganist your own ppl?
Kudos to DAWN for publishing this. It strikes me -- the first poster by HBL showing soldiers... appear to be straight from a "G.I.Joe" flick (i.e. American) esp the main soldier shown, and the one from United Bank shows what surely appears more as a Communist Guerilla in the mould of Che Guevara rather than what would have been regarded as a 'Proper Jihadist' ... little wonder that Pakistanis in general were not inspired that much to contribute to a war that they knew they would never win... and hence the 'denial mode' that persists till today.
Inshallah we would be victorious soon.
God blessed victory on 16/12/1971.
By publishing this and that too today, you are rubbing salt on the wound
@arindam What's wrong with religion running the state???
@Mansoor Look around you.
Dawn Well done for opening up the eyes of General Public in Pakistan .Hope DAWN keeps up the tradition and keeps us all well informed about our past mistakes .We all should learn a lesson for this .
It was all about collecting money
These ads were misleading at best. Surrender was imminent and Yahya Khan was having a drink to alleviate stress.
We have not learnt the lesson from debacle of Dacca, doing the same with Balochi and old/new sindhies.
......and today Pakistan has experienced the jihad by TTP militants. Isn't it?????
@Mickey when shall you print the ads of indo china war of 1962.
@Saif India had to attack u bcause the number refugees coming to India frm east pak was too large to handle.India was and is a developing country.pak army was doing a genocide there, but pak people hav turned a blind eye to that
And what was the result of 1971 war???
A person like yahya and Bhutto destroyed Pakistan. Awami league won the election and they should have formed the govt.
It was only when we refused to give awami league what was their right, and abuse faced by Bengali by our armed forces. Lets face the fact@Umar Farooq
today it seems like bad joke.
@Mansoor What's the good about it??? Barbaric laws applied, killing of another religion people, no space for democracy....If that's not wrong then yes go ahead and do that.......
@raj U R right, violent jihad is wrong. When children die ITS JUST WRONG!
@Mansoor what has happened today is exactly what is wrong.
@Rizwan After reading a series of articles in Dawn what a question?
@Saif when you are at war , there is no day or night.
Alas! we had learned from our mistakes.
@Rizwan IT is celebrated as Vijay Diwas in India day because 93000 Pakistani soldiers had surrendered to India - videos/papers are available all over internet.
@Rizwan Indians do not celebrate 16th December, only Bangladeshis do.
Pakistani politicians and Military never want to share power with Mullah but either they want to use them for their purpose or don't want to offend them for what ever disorder/mischief they want to create.
lot to learn from these times. Today we don't make these posters but the mentality has not changed. thanks Dawn!
Actually kind of cool.
@AdnanK: it's called History, Adnan, and those who don't learn from it are doomed to repeat it.
@Mansoor Well, the sordid events of Peshawar should tell you what is wrong with letting religion playing too much role in your life
It is not celebrated in India. Vijay Diwas is celebrated for evicting Pakistan forces out of Kargil.
that's the problem you bring religion in everything, what has religion to do with war fund? at least learn a lesson now don't be so fanatic as you were in 71 and even today. Be secular of Pakistan will divide further.
cheap propoganda, pathetic, sick from these sick politicians who sit in their living room and watch people die in the name of religion and country
just to have enough votes for their next elections,
let face the fact, Awami league won the election they should have formed the govt
It was Yayha and Bhutto who denied this .
Looks like December 16 is very bad day for Pakistan........look what happened in Peshawar today.
Agreed with mr.usman khalid.Welll said bro. That's the only reason behind the seperation of bd & pak.
I wonder that has changed as far as Pakistan's thinking goes since 1971.
It may be time for self examination, don't you think?
Lets look at Europe and their wars they seem to have buried their hatch
Its time for a purer form of Jihad today. Go forth Pakistani Army and obliterate the Taliban demons who killed the world's 175 children en masse today. Make sure they cannot hide from the response to this terrible attack. Maybe the US and India can help as well. Show the unity and steadfastness to get rid of the Taliban scourge from this planet.
Compare them with Indian war effort - which did not invoke Hinduism and was totally secular in nature. ho won ?
No one wins a war, both side lose. Wars are started by politicians, run by bureaucrats, fought by soldiers, but the ones who suffer the most are civilians.
Even all the countries in Europe were fighting with each other, England, Spain and France had rivalry for 1000 years, Germany, Italy crushed rest of Europe mere 60 yrs back during World War II. But look at them today, all living prosperously, no need to have huge defence spending.
India and Pakistan were actually 1 nation for 5000 years, can we not forget 50 years are rivalry and live in prosperity. NO need for VISAs, no need for defence forces, we respect each others existence and values and live like Europe.
Please give it a serious thought.
@imran and lining up their pockets
@Roz A new country Bangladesh came into existence
@Abdul Shafiqullah ...."Its time for a purer form of Jihad today. Go forth Pakistani Army and obliterate the Taliban demons".....If it includes action against LeT, JuD, Hizbul Mujahaddin, Jundullah, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, Al-Badr, Afghan Taliban, Haqqani group etc then India, Iran & Afghanistan will join hands with Pakistan to wipe out this menace.
If Pakistan continues to play the game with "good terrorists" and try to eliminate "bad terrorists" then it continues to go down
These were war posters? They look like ads for merchants and petty companies hawking their wares to the public!
I agree we should jointly fight the terrorists. We should not bring any super power like U.S or China, super power is responsible for this Taliban in Pakistan. Why not keep distance from all super powers and religious teachings from country like Saudi Arabia.
@Saif - thats the problem, you guys have a good reason for doing everything. That means one of two things. All your problems are due to India. OR, present day Pakistan is trouble-free. Because, everything had a good reason and justification behind it - such things can never cause trouble.
What a sad day for the world and very brave of Dawn to initiate some soul searching
best is,"ladies rush to join jehad." donate 40" jerseys....i see what they did there
@imran - you got that right buddy, it was all about money
@arindam Attack on Pakistan is attack on Muslims who follow Islam. And we should not forget that Pakistan was made in the name of Islam.
@Mansoor Religion is for unification with God, a personal belief. Its not political.
alas islam is an exception
I am profoundly saddened, cried whole day, yesterday. Gone with them are those little dreams, parents expectations and humanity
@Dr. Abdul Manan , what about the situation when ur army will call you to fight war for westerners. still u will fight. is it srill jahad. pak. fought all wars for west, though every time call for jahad was given.
So you people thought committing a genocide in Bangladesh at 71 was 'Jihad' ? Seriously! Well if you are still blissfully unaware of what Pakistani Army was doing in Bangladesh at 71, please Google it, you will find loads!
Face it, West Pakistan army is to blame for this partition, If they didn't start genocide at 26th March 1971, we would still be one.
On the other hand this are the adverts in Bangladesh on the 16th of December 1972. sharp contrast to these?
Kudos to Dawn for sharing this. It's very timely. All these ads were invain because the approach was not correct.
Even at this time Taliban which has played havoc at Peshawar in the name of Islam are Wrong in approach.
I would like to appeal all inviduals to rise above religion and worry for Humanity.
If religion is meant to spread hatred , then it's wrong somewhere or the interpretation is wrong done by few despots or selfish people.
and this is true to all religions across the world.
Let's make this world a better place , rather than limiting and creating devides in the name of religion.
East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) was thousands of miles away from the Centre of power in the west and the authorities should have been very careful in dealing with their eastern wing, when elections were held. When the Awami League won the elections, the party was not allowed to form the govt and the Bengali speaking Muslims were subject to torture of all kinds, resulting in an exodus of Bengali refugees into India. In fact, I still remember, a special extra stamp called "refugee stamp" of 5 paise was levied on every postal article to meet the extra financial burden on the Indian govt. The Indian govt had to intervene to solve a very difficult situation and did so eventually. Please remember India didn't attach the territory after spending a lot of money in the war, but quietly backed away handing over the country to the native Bengalis. India does not celebrate the day. I was a postgraduate student at the time and what I have recalled here are facts.
As an Indian I understand the sacrifices made by the Pakistani soldiers even if it was against my own country and they deserve to be respected by my fellow-Indians too. These ads may appear childish but all nations espouse the same sentiments in times of war. Why should we bear an ill will against Pakistan the nation even as we are ready to defend our own country?
we will fight for our country and will dfeat all teerroist
I do like to honor DAWN for its unbiased reporting in Politics about neighboring countries i.e. within SAARC. I am amazed at your capability to coagulate as well as copulate the audiences. Keep steadfast to your principles.
On another note, there are peace marches taking place all over india.
Were these posters for the genocide against Bangladesh? Jihad against Muslims? Man.
Thank you so much for posting these!
These are 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war posters
The second one states: "Bengal's mothers--daughters are all freedom fighters"
The fourth picture actually states "Bengal's Hindus, Bengal's Buddhists, Bengal Christians, Bengal's Muslims-- we are Bengali"
Again very sharp contrasts to these.
well i really don't understand what i should comment , I'd just say then and now we just have been stuck to only religion and religion , we made Pakistan under the name of religion , now we are destroying it under the name of religion .
@Rizwan My dear Rizwan your leaders political or the establishment never accepted them to be your brothers your leadders were not ready to give them their due rights hence it was bound to happen. There are numerous books written in this regards by your Ex General Beaurocrates and the report of Hammudar Rehman commission appointed by Pakistan Govt is sufficient to tell the tale.
@Saif India never attacked Pakistan it was Pakistan who attacked India in 1948, 1965 and 1971 .
Dawn is more independent than newspapers elsewhere.
@Sam Pakistan is not the thekedaar of all Muslims around the world. India has more Muslims than Pakistan.
Everyday I read Dawn through internet from India because of its transparency in reporting, using of Simple language, unbiased and truthful presentation, courageous criticism, supplying of reasonable data, adequate picture and lastly for daring attitude which are the assets of Dawn ............can only compare with London Publication Guardian. Some Indian news papers should learn from Dawn how to publish news despite of thousand barriers.
@Murthy as a naive and simplistic citizen, you view the indian military intervention as motivated by human suffering in East Pakistan but your view overlooks the political and strategic dynamics of those events for Pakistan-India relations. It was naked aggression planned well in advance.
@Umar Farooq This is not Jihad. It had nothing to do with Islam. Please stop tarnishing the word Jihad, with political conflicts. There is not a single territory on the earth, where one can name any political conflict as Jihad. Want to learn more. Visit http://www.alislam.org/jihad/
@AdnanK In case you missed it, its to show that Pakistan and it's establishment hasn't learned a single lesson since 1971.
@Saif no India help Bangladesh to emerge as victorious..... Long live Bangladesh.. thanks to India
Shouldn't we be burying the ghosts of past and learn how to live in peace now?
FYI, 16-Dec has never been celebrated in India outside military circles - EVER. Did it ever occur to anyone that this is to ensure we don't rub the wounds (and encourage further enmity) with Pakistan? I hope people in Pakistan too move on, and get a chance to live in peace and progress.
1971 happened a generation ago or more! It's a new world today, where there's no need to live in hatred. I'd rather by happier working 14 hours a day trying to buy a big screen TV than be busy thinking about what happened some 40 years ago. Lets work hard to create better lives for ourselves, living in the past doesn't help.
@Rizwan ...Just to correct you...No one celebrates 16th december in India.. I have not, in my lifetime seen or even heard of any celebration, whatsoever. .. we rather, remember the soldiers who laid their lives in that battle. hardly a celebration.
@ashis Because army kept people of Pakistan in dark regarding situation in East Pakistan then.
Interesting the jihad mongers are busy in investments reaping financial gains from the growth of India & Bangladesh.
@Saif it was Pakistan that launched pre-emptive air strikes on India on Dec 3rd 1971. If anything India was very fair with the peace settlement afterwards in an attempt to promote peace.
@Mansoor Religion is spiritual and pure and must be protected to remain that way. Politics requires compromise to run a huge country. Mixing the two destroys religion and country. My humble opinion.
My salute to Dawn for having the courage to publish this.An unjustified war cannot be won by merely calling it Jehad and invoking the name of Allah. Allah belongs to everyone and takes the side of right against wrong. Allah is watching. Beware.
@Mansoor - Children get killed. that's what's wrong.
This is how things appear after 45 years of an event. Many people here are making fun of these ads. They are those who support the separation of Bengal from Pakistan. Those who still mourn the separation, advocates the ads.
Today, Pakistan is facing another big war and that is against home-grown and imported militancy. Dawn and rest media is full with similar vows as contained here in these ads. I don't know what the outcome of this war might be. But I wish that Dawn publish it again after 45 years and we all are alive.
@Sunil your India didn't even have that then
As a nation Bangladesh is doing better than us. They have steady foreign reserves, growing economy and investment incentives. They made great deal of improvement is education, poverty eradication and population control. A political class in Bangladesh is development minded. Average citizen is more moderate than many of our frontier brothers. There is very little 'extreme radicalism'
The word jehad as I understand is something sublime, only invoked when the religion is really in peril.
By continually using this word liberally and without moderation in the past few years it has lost its real import and now it has acquired a negative connotation, consequently a 'jehadi' today is looked at as somebody unwelcome even dangerous.
In the ads here, too, it has been used as a call to rally people, but its use is totally ironic since the armed forces in the Eastern wing of the country were not exactly following the tenets of Islam.
Seriously, this was a state. Hope Pakistan is not blind anymore after 16.12.14. Religion in any form has only given you nothing and alot of pain. Open your eyes.
India is your friend, not the enemy. Look at your history going all the way back to the split from Antarica. Greek saying goes, know yourself. There is the key. Wake up before more attacks like 16.12.14. Education, business and career ....thats all.
@arindam Call for Jihad was valid then as Jihad can only be declared by the state.
@arindam The call was for donations.
Wrong context.... The ads date back to 71 and in no way it can be compared to current scenario.... We were at WAR with India at that time.
Everyone has a past so do Pakistan ...If we learn from it and better our future...that will be the best lesson...
Very natural! what else do you expect in times of WAR?
@Lefty There is nothing funny about it. I can understand this if coming from an Indian
Any country should learn from past mistake....Unfortunately Pakistan did not learn....However liberals in that country knows this very well...
India did not attack us! It was a civil war. Yes, India supported the Bengalis but it was the West Pakistan policies that started the war.
Fall of British empire,1947 and 1971 partitions are lessons for British,India and Pakistan respectively.
@India Hindu No .But Indian RAW and Mukti Bahni play a role to kill innocent Biharis or urdu speaking on the name of freedom fighting. Thats why after many years they think on the wrong side.
Long live Pakistan.
Thanks Dawn taking us back in history...
Can you publish or where can we see archived news papers?
@Mansoor Everything is wrong with religion running the state.
Jehad has nothing to do with war. Islam means peace. Bad things happen when religion is hijacked for political reasons.
May be that time it was ok to the eyes of public. But now it looks very funny after so many years.
Wow! Macho,very much so!
Just bring all this "josh" into economics, and education, and science and technology....and, all the 180 million Muslims of Pakistan, can have a better life!
The Indian Army had a chief in Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw ( a Parsi), who delegated the authority to run operations in the Eastern Front to Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora ( a Sikh) who was in turn aided by JFR Jacob ( an Indian Jew)....:):):)
If that is not a show case of secularism, I wonder what secularism is?:)
In Dhaka, the Pakistani Army had 30,000 troops as against 3000 Indian paratroopers surrounding it, and if the top brass had decided to fight on, they could have fought for at least next three weeks?
Ah,well, just recollecting FACTS!:):)
How do non-muslim Pakistanis feel when government and army starts fighting under banner of Islam?
@Spock well said.
@Abdul Shafiqullah great Mr. Abdul... Really appreciate your views... We must fight common enemy not only terrorism but also poverty, climate change, unequal opportunity, improper wealth sharing etc.. Etc... Why south as is too cannot become another Europe? Just forget the religion or keep it with in house.... That's all for us to become more and more happier...
What's the use of showing these ads. We haven't learned anything from the past nor probably we wish to.
@Hafiz Ahmad Yar Please Sir, you know well from Pakistan's experience what a burden one million refugees can be for an emerging economy and nation.Pakistan got refugees from Afghanistan which placed a huge burden on Pak economy.
Excellent post !!! This is why we are here today
DAWN you are doing the "real" journalism to help your country rise. DAWN would be right up there with very few other publishing group with integrity.
This all began when a greedy person without authority and people's vote become the ruler of Pakistan in October 1958.Due to his lust for power and family rule and bad governance he disfigured Pakistan.A lesson to learn and only way to move forward and progress is justice, merit, localisation, rights, truth, decentralisation and good governance.
@Binoey what about in india specially after BJP government have taken over NewDehli
But I thought 'jehad' was some kind of 'inner struggle' not a war of killing and bloodshed like the terrorists say it is....or is it that the terrorists are right?
