SHEIKHUPURA: A number of tail-end farmers held a protest demonstration here on Tuesday in front of the press club against what they said non-availability of canal water.

The protesters led by Rai Ijaz Ahmed Kharal of Abyanwala told the media the lands located along both banks of the Sharaqpur distributory were hit by water scarcity owing to massive water theft allegedly by infl uential landlords in connivance with some offi cebearers of Farmers Organisation.

Mr Kharal said the Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority staff seemed helpless to control the incidence of water theft.

KIDNAP BID: An 18-year-old girl sustained bullet injuries while foiling her kidnap bid here on Tuesday near a stadium.

Reports said ‘Ay’, a student of a vocational institution, was on her way home after study. Near the stadium three suspects tried to bundle her into their vehicle, but she raised an alarm. The suspects opened fi re, injuring the girl.

A-Division police are looking into the matter.
