KARACHI, Jan 21: A judicial magistrate under whose supervision the post-mortem examination of a young man who had died in police custody was conducted confirmed on Monday that the victim’s jaw was broken and the body bore torture marks.

Twenty-five-year-old Khalid Hussain died from alleged police torture on the night between Jan 19 and Jan 20 at the Manghopir police station, where he was being grilled for his alleged involvement in a robbery case.

Judicial Magistrate (west) Sohail Ahmed Mashori submitted his initial report in the court of the district and sessions judge (west) on Monday.

The DJ (west) had appointed the magistrate to inquire into the cause of death.

The magistrate stated in his report that he went to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and supervised the proceedings conducted under Section 176 (inquiry by magistrate into cause of death) of the criminal procedure code.

He stated that he physically examined the body in the presence of a team of doctors and relatives of the deceased and found that the victim’s jaw appeared to be fractured and he was bleeding from the mouth.

He stated that multiple marks of abrasion, bruises were noticeable on the face, chest and other parts of the body. Samples were collected in jars for a chemical analysis and the cause of death was reserved till the receipt of the report, he said in his report.

Meanwhile, two policemen were remanded in police custody till Jan 23 in the custodial death case.

The investigation officer of the case produced Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Anwar and Constable Pervez Ahmed before Judicial Magistrate (west) Azizullah Khoso and sought their custody for 14 days.

However, the magistrate remanded the suspects in police custody till Jan 23.

According to the prosecution, a police party picked up the victim along with some other suspects in Federal B Area’s Water Pump locality on Jan 19 and brought them to the Manghopir police station.

The police did not lodge any FIR or made an entry in the daily dairy. The other suspects were released by police after allegedly receiving a bribe while Khalid was allegedly tortured to death since he failed to pay the demanded bride, it added.

A case (FIR 14/2013) was registered against some policemen under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of an uncle of the victim at the Manghopir police station.

Policeman Javed Qureshi and other members of the arresting party were shown absconders in the case.

Manghopir SHO Inspector Nasir Mehmood was suspended and demoted after the incident.
