LAHORE, Dec 26: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif says the PML-N will not accept postponement of the general election.

“My party wants stability of democratic system and postponement of the general election is not acceptable to it at all,” he was quoted as saying in a meeting with Senator Sajid Mir, president of the Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith, here on Wednesday.

“The incompetent rulers have defamed democracy in the name of conciliation and the whole nation is anxiously waiting for new elections,” a press release quoted him as saying.

In response to some intelligence reports, Shahbaz had a couple of days ago warned of a civil war in the country if the polls are delayed.

Discussing an overall political situation both Shahbaz and Sajid Mir held a unanimous view that the general election should be held on time and in a transparent manner.

The chief minister said holding of immediate polls was the need of the hour. “The need for fresh mandate is more than ever necessary now to steer the country out of crises.”

He said he hoped that through the power of vote, the masses would bring  for ward an honest, committed and public-spirited leadership which would solve national problems.

Shahbaz said the day of accountability of such elements who used power to safeguard their personal interests was very near.

He also reiterated party chief Nawaz Sharif’s stance that any change in the country should be through ballot and not bullet.

The chief minister said that inefficient rulers did not take any practical step for the elimination of terrorism, corruption, loadshedding, unemployment and poverty.

He said the country would plunge into anarchy and chaos if the grievances of the people were not redressed.

“The country is passing through the most critical phase of its history and the PPP government has badly failed on every front.”

He asserted that the political leadership would have to adopt a national policy for steering the country out of crises.
