ACCORDING to a Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) notice posted on its website on Oct 18, it called for admission formalities merit serial numbers from 1 to 240 on Oct 20 and from 241 to 600 on Oct 21 with five separate pay orders consisting of merit tuition and other fees from all 600 candidates.

This tight schedule was provided only to arrange for the five pay orders. My daughter was called with her original documents and pay orders because her merit number is slightly above 240. Immediately after attendance, the director, admissions, announced that they had already closed admissions on the basis of merit at serial number 236 and directed all remaining candidates to get their pay orders cancelled from DUHS accounts department.

Some heated argument also took place between several parents and the director, admissions.

It appears that the DUHS made a fool of 364 candidates from serial number 236 up to serial number 600 by calling them for an interview with their original documents and five pay orders from each candidate. Did the director feel any remorse towards the inconvenience caused to the parents of 364 candidates in obtaining the pay orders? When I visited my bank for cancellation of the pay orders, the bank manager told me that a new procedure had recently been introduced for submitting indemnity on a Rs200 stamp paper for cancellation of pay orders. Now this will be an additional burden on the parents for the cancellation of 1,820 unutilised pay orders.

I hope the DUHS administration will revise its procedure soon so that such inconvenience is not faced by parents in 2013.

The mix of divisive cultural politics and growth-oriented economics that feeds Hindu middle-class ambition and provides targeted welfare are key ingredients in the BJP’s political trajectory.
