LAHORE, July 11: Governor Latif Khosa said on Wednesday the judiciary had neither supremacy over parliament nor did it frame the Constitution of the country.“It is parliament that makes the Constitution and it is also authorised to make changes to it. The Supreme Court does not belong to one individual rather it is a court for all people of Pakistan,” he told reporters here.

He asked the Sharif brothers to stop giving an impression that courts were subservient to them. “The trend of taking out rallies in favour of the judiciary should now end,” he added.

Mr Khosa further said parliament was not only a supreme body but also could make certain changes to the structure of the judicial system. He said there was a time when the courts would speak through their judgments and now judges of the superior courts were issuing statements at functions. “The judiciary should only focus on its work,” he advised.

Referring to the passage of the contempt of court law, the governor said the new legislation in parliament had been done with a “two-thirds majority” and no party other than the PML-N opposed it. He asked the judiciary to decide the cases on merit.

The government wanted strong institutions for the progress of the country, he said.
