ISLAMABAD, Nov 15: Special US envoy to Afghan opposition James F. Dobbins on Saturday met President Gen Pervez Musharraf and held two rounds of talks at the foreign office.

In his meeting with the president, an official spokesman said, the envoy discussed the Afghan situation and the efforts being made under the United Nations for the establishment of a broad-based government in Kabul.

Earlier, Mr Dobbins met the foreign secretary where the focus remained on recent developments in Afghanistan as well as the future course of action, a press release said.

The foreign secretary reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm support in the formation of a broad-based, multi-ethnic, political dispensation in Afghanistan.

He assured the US envoy of Pakistan’s continuing support for the international coalition in its war against terrorism.

Mr Dobbins appreciated Pakistan’s principled stand against international terrorism and hoped for an early solution of the Afghan imbroglio.

Both sides reiterated their support for Lakhdar Brahimi’s efforts for the Afghan peace process and emphasized the need for an immediate international development and humanitarian assistance for the Afghan refugees and internally displaced people with the political process.

Mr Dobbins is expected to visit Peshawar on Friday to hold talks with Afghan leaders.
