Importance of Lowari tunnel stressed

Published September 15, 2002

CHITRAL, Sept 14: A PML(QA) leader has said that construction of Lowari tunnel is vital to the progress and prosperity of Chitral.

Talking to Dawn, Shahzada Iftikharuddin, PML(QA) candidate for NA-32, Chitral, said the district was rich in natural resources but due to problems in reaching the area all its resources remained unexplored.

A holder of MBA degree from a foreign university, Shahzada Iftikharuddin said that rulers should realise the fact and rise to the occasion by materialising the “dream of Chitralis”.

Regarding largescale unemployment, he said the problem could be overcome with efficient management and development of natural resources as there was a wide gap between jobs in the public sector and the number of unemployed youth. He added that the mineral sector could provide jobs to a number of people.

He also criticised the role of nationalised banks in Chitral and said they did not help promote local enterprises.

About political instability, he said successive governments did not allow political institutions to gain strength. He, however, did not favour the idea of National Security Council to stabilize political situation.
