RAWALPINDI: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday celebrated Independence Day in Adiala jail with other inmates.
“Three cakes weighing 10 pounds each were brought to the jail and the former premier paid for them,” said a jail official.
At the request of some inmates, Mr Sharif cut a cake and made a brief speech, he added.
Mr Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law retired Capt Muhammad Safdar were present at the event. Ms Maryam informed women inmates about the progress the country made during the tenure of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government.
According to the official, the jail inmates took interest when the former prime minister told them about events leading to his government’s decision about conducting nuclear tests in 1998. He said Mr Sharif had also spoken about his family’s struggle after the independence of the country.
Meanwhile, Mr Sharif has expressed the resolve to initiate a programme for providing higher education to prisoners in jails across the country, according to a senior PML-N leader.
“In this regard, the Islamic International University’s help will be required,” he told Dawn. There was a plan to provide postgraduate education to interested prisoners and classes for it would be organised inside jails, he added.

While I'm not PML-N fan, I do believe white collar criminals should not be jailed. We should not be happy that NS is in jail. All we want is our looted money back along with hefty penalties, interest and disqualification of criminals to hold any public office or take part in politics. They should also be on exit control. Keeping them in jail not only costs so much money and resources, but also in some way glorifies them.

Why is this even a news? What's so amazing about cutting a cake in a jail? He's a convinced criminal serving jail time, time to move on and get more of the corrupt elements in that jail with him. Pakistan is moving in the right direction, hopefully Imran will start a crackdown on corruption.

You think of the prisoners when you are inside there, having a govt. for so many years, why you or your ministers never think of this higher education in the prisons. Or even make a library for the inmates, there are some children with mothers inside, what did someone think for them, well if a step has been taken in regard to this then - well appreciated.

I disagree with @anti-corruption completely , if we don't jail these so-called white collar criminals then what deterrence do we have with this class of criminals commiting crimes over and over again with the knowledge that they would not be going to jail. I on the other hand would like to see these criminals be given an examplary punishment so the next generation of these socalled criminals would think twice before commiting a crime.
To MNS i say maybe he should have thought of prisoner education for all those decades when he was in power.

@Anti-Corruption this is the reason why came Pakistan and are in jail , they are not interested at all to give back all looted money they have , but Insallah justice will prevail and all the money will be in Pakistan soon , main person is Isaq Dar if he is caught Nawaz will be finish , plus Zardari , his Sister , shebaz shareef , najam sethi and fazlul rehman are on list , ALL will be in adiala but as per our system we have to wait for bit , INSALLAH Khair for Pakistan .

@Anti-Corruption point very well-made. But I think they should go through the pain and agony of being in the prison for a year or so. This way, they will willingly handover the looted money to state, otherwise they will have no incentive to pay back the money they plundered during their tenure.

Is NS the New Minister of Jail of PTI government!!! How he is allowed to make such sweeping statements about jail reforms, which he never did when he was PM. Is he a convicted prisoner or a Minister for Prisons? So, for the first time since entering politics, the King gets to meet his erstwhile subjects, behind bars. When he was free, you will never see him walking any streets of any town or city in Pakistan, mingling with ordinary Pakistanis!
Now he's sharing cakes with them. In ten years, maybe he will forget politics altogether. That may not be so bad for Pakistan.

I feel disgusted with the statement that Nawaz Sharif quotes that he made Pakistan a nuclear power. HE WAS RELUCTANT TO TEST because Clinton advised him not to. It was only under heavy military and popular pressure that he yielded; fearing he may be removed from power. Credit really needs to go to those thousands of patriotic Pakistanis whom over decades contributes to the atomic programme. Many of whom were imprisoned abroad for there efforts.
