ISLAMABAD: The International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) is considering implementing a dress code in the biotechnology department, after issuing the code for women studying in the faculty of management sciences.

The management sciences faculty at IIUI’s women’s campus recently issued a circular prohibiting students from wearing see-through dresses, ‘deep necks’, sleeveless shirts, skinny jeans, tights, capri pants, makeup, heavy jewellery and high heels. The new dress code said women could wear shalwar kameez with a shirt that is at least knee length and trousers with long shirts, and dupattas or scarves are mandatory with all dresses.

IIUI Rector Dr Masoon Yasinzai told Dawn on Thursday that they issued the circular to implement the dress code in the management sciences faculty the other day and in the coming days they will also implement this code in the biotechnology department and gradually move towards other faculties.

The rector defended the decision by saying that the aforementioned notification is part of the university’s ‘decent’ dress code, which is included in admission forms.

He said the university decided to start enforcing it in the management sciences faculty, whose building is in an isolated location and from where women walk to other departments. “There are a significant number of male teachers in this faculty,” he added.
