KARACHI: An internationally acclaimed visiting pathologist from Australia on Wednesday said the introduction of renal biopsy and its related pathological investigation had immensely revolutionised the medical treatment of kidney diseases.

He was delivering the keynote address at the Dr Ahmed Sayeed Memorial Lecture at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). The memorial lecture was organised by the SIUT to pay tribute to Dr Ahmed Sayeed, a leading Pakistani pathologist, who passed away in the United States recently. Dr Sayeed, an old graduate of Dow Medical College, was also the founder and co-president of the SIUT in North America.

Dr Rajalingam Sinniah, who is a clinical professor of pathology at the University of Western Australia, said in his lecture that accurate and early diagnoses was a vital component for the treatment and management of any ailment.

“Therefore,” he added, “importance of renal pathological services cannot be further emphasised.”

The visiting doctor from Australia lauded the available pathological facilities at the SIUT, saying they were fully equipped with all the diagnostic modalities including facilities required for transplantation. He said it was commendable that all facilities of SIUT were free of cost.

Director SIUT Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi and Prof Naqi Zafar, head of the pathology department at the hospital, also spoke. They paid rich tribute to the late pathologist.

Dr Fatema Sayeed, wife of Dr Sayeed, who flew in from Houston to attend the memorial meeting, was also present.
