PESHAWAR: Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peshawar Dr Mohammad Abid has stressed the importance of sports for youth to create a spirit of competition in them.

A healthy mind always resides in a healthy body and for that matter our youth ought to engage in sports and other co-curricular activities, he said while addressing as the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of annual inter colleges (boys) tournament (2016-17), held at the directorate of sports, UoP, here on Tuesday, according to a press release.

Dr Abid said the varsity would extend support to its directorate of sports for holding such healthy competitions in future. He urged the prize winning players of different games to stay involved in sports as it would help them in defeating bad habits, and becoming useful members of society.

The University of Peshawar, besides winning first prizes in badminton, basketball, cricket, football, handball, hockey, squash, table tennis and volleyball, also won the general trophy of the tournament by securing 74 points.

Paras Jan of Government College Peshawar and Hilal Ahmad of Government College Hayatabad were declared best athletes by securing 36 points each.

Government College Peshawar won the first prizes in tennis and athletics, Government Superior Science College Peshawar won kabaddi and Government College of Commerce & Management Sciences, Charsadda, won tug of war competition. Former squash world champion Qamar Zaman, vice president of sports committee Dr Fazle Subhani and director sports, UoP, Bahr-i-Karam Khan also spoke on the occasion.
