KARACHI: In a photo-finish, favourite bay mare Princess H.K.M. edged 10-year-old dark bay horse One Way II to lift The Kashmir Day Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

It was a field day for the horse-racing fraternity as four favourites returned with flying colours in a five-race card.

Having placed second in the last two outings, Princess H.K.M. made amends by justifying top billing in a start-to-finish bid. King’s Hand and Loot Lo occupied third and fourth places on board respectively.

The victorious horse was ridden home by rider Kashif Qamar whose younger brother Zohaib had upset the applecart by guiding chestnut horse Almeer to a splendid four-length victory over fancied Sher Khan in an earlier race.

It was a two-horse race between Almeer and Sher Khan who changed positions on some occasions before the former winning the five furlong race.

Both the horses, Almeer and Princess H.K.M. belonged to the stables of Zia-ur-Rehman who celebrated a double.

The KRC steward and a prominent owner of racing horses Irfan Mehdi also have a fruitful day as matched the double of Zia-ur-Rehman.

First, mare Cash N Carry did his owner proud by galloping to three-and-a-half lengths victory over Ayaash to land the second race and then her stable-mate mare Fairy Tale stretched winning streak getting the better of Follow My Shadow by 10 lengths in the concluding race.

Both the horses were trained by Ghulam Shabbir II.

At the outset mare New Hope won the opening race by getting the better of dark bay horse Kalu Khan by 6½ lengths.
